Abu Dhabi: The vicar of the Catholic Church Pope Francis in an interview during his visit to the United Arab Emirates has admitted that Catholic priests and bishops had sexually abused nuns.
He even shockingly admitted that some nuns were kept in slavery.
“There are some priests and also bishops who have done it,” the pontiff said in response to a journalist’s question on the abuse of nuns, speaking on the return flight from his trip to the United Arab Emirates.
“The Church is aware of the issue and we are working on it,” replied the Pontiff when asked about the steps being taken by the Catholic Church to stop sexual abuse by clergy.
The nun sexual abuses issue hit the headlines in India last year in India and globally after a 44-year old nun in Kerala accused Bishop Franco Mulakkal of the Archdiocese of Jalandhar of raping her 13-times.
Bishop Franco was the first senior clergyman in India to be arrested on accusations of rape and sodomy.
Last week India was rocked with yet another senior clergyman Bishop PK Samuel of the Church of South India who has a non-bailable arrest warrant issued against him under POCSO, molested and threatened another woman; an FIR has been filed against him.
