Washington: A group of protestors in the US State of Maryland toppled a statue of Christopher Columbus, the person who discovered the American continent and threw it into the city’s Inner Harbor.
The incidence took place on Saturday, which happened to be the American Independence Day, as per the reports in ‘The Baltimore Sun’
The incident was caught on tape, where the demonstrators could be seen taking down the statue using a rope, with the July 4 fireworks being audible at a distance.
The statue was installed in 1984, and this is the latest monument in the United States to be taken down by the agitators, protesting against the alleged existence of racism in the country.
Protests were sparked across several parts of the US in the wake of the May 25 death of George Floyd, an African-American man in police custody.
US President Donald Trump has criticised the removal of colonial and Confederate statues, calling the protesters “angry mobs,” who want to erase the US history. Many protesters have described these statues as symbols of racial oppression
