PSI Sawant Accused of Assaulting Valpoi Resident

PSI Dattaguru Sawant attached to the Valpoi Police Station has been accused of allegedly assaulting and high-handedly arresting an innocent Valpoi resident Vincent Fernandes.

Vincent Fernandes who on 26th June at around 7.45 p.m was trying to amicably settle an accident involving a Maruti van and a motorcycle was verbally abused and physically assaulted at the Valpoi Police Station by PSI Dattaguru Sawant. PSI Sawant later arrested Vincent under Section 151 of Cr.P.C. by falsely claiming that it was a preventive arrest.

With Vincent’s suffering from high blood pressure he was taken from the lock up to a local hospital where he was admitted. He was next morning produced before the Bicholim Deputy Collector and released on bail.

Stating that Vincent Fernandes could have been another victim of police atrocity like the late Cipriano Fernandes, the local residents have demanded that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar should take stern action against PSI Dattaguru Sawant.

Vincent’s family has sought the intervention of Director General of Police Kishen Kumar while Vincent Fernandes is also moving the Police Complaints Authority and the Human Rights Commission against PSI Dattaguru Sawant.

It may be recalled that PSI Dattaguru Sawant was earlier dismissed from service for misbehavior and dereliction of duty but was later on political pressure reinstated in service.
