Putin, Rouhani to hold meeting on sidelines of Russia-Turkey-Iran summit on Thursday

Moscow, Feb 14 (GCCurrentAffairs) Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani will hold a separate meeting on the sidelines of Russia-Turkey-Iran summit on the Syrian political settlement in the Russian resort city of Sochi on February 14.

Russian and Iranian leaders’ meeting was announced by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on February 5. The agenda is expected to include current issues of bilateral cooperation with particular focus on existing joint projects in trade and the economy.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov expressed hope that upcoming Putin-Rouhani bilateral talks would bring new results in terms of strengthening economic cooperation between the countries.

Putin is also expected to hold a bilateral meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of the summit. According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, the parties will primarily focus on the situation in Idlib de-escalation zone, as well as the issue of Syria’s constitutional commission.

The meetings will be held in the framework of the fourth summit of representatives of the Astana format on the Syrian conflict settlement, Turkey, Iran and Russia, which are also guarantors of the Syrian ceasefire regime.

According to Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, the Russian delegation to the summit also includes the Russian foreign minister. Zakharova added that contacts between the foreign policy chiefs of Russia, Iran and Turkey on the sidelines of the summit could also take place.
