Villagers from Cansaulim, Arossim and Utorda came together to strongly oppose the proposed bypass linking the South Western Railway to Konkan Railway by constructing yet another railway line from Cansaulim to Majorda.
They argued that with the Railway Board approving a parallel railway track on the South Western Railway, there was absolutely no need for the bypass as trains could change tracks at the Majorda junction.
“The bypass track will virtually convert our villages into a railway yard,” said Vivian Almeida a former employee of Mormugao Port Trust which has proposed this bypass to enhance its business..
The villagers asked what benefit the proposed bypass would bring to Goans or the local villagers and also wondered why Goans should sacrifice their land and peace for the welfare of people from Maharashtra, Karnataka and Gujarat given the fact that these states have many ports that can cater to their business needs.
In fact way back in 1999 when this proposal was put up, the villagers had opposed and subsequently when the erstwhile South Central Railway after its transfer to the South Western Railway dropped the proposal when it was converting the meter gauge railway track to a broad gauge.
More recently at the Gram Sabha meeting of Cansaulim Arossim Cuelim Village Panchayat held in December 2009, a resolution opposing the railway bypass was unanimously adopted.
