Rajya Sabha adjourned till 1500 hrs amid Oppn protests

New Delhi: The proceedings of the Rajya Sabha were adjourned till 1500 hrs amid Opposition ruckus over the nationality of MoS Nitish Pramanik on Monday, the first day of the Monsoon session.

Soon after the House reconvened after the second adjournment, All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) Member Sukhendu Shekar Roy took up the issue of nationality of Pramanik who, as per a section of media, is a Bangladeshi. At this, Deputy Chairman Harivansh, who was in the Chair, told the members that they can raise the question of order only on the issue before the House.

To this, Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge said that the member has raised a valid question and he too has the right to know about the citizenship of the Union Minister of State for Home.

Leader of the House Piyush Goyal said ,’We strongly condemn the remark made by the member about the Union Minister of State for Home. This is not true and it should be expunged. Mr Pramanik is a first-time minister and hails from tribal community. It is unfortunate he is being targetted like this.’

Meanwhile, the Deputy Chairman asked the opposition members who had left their seats to resume their seats. He asked Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to introduce the Bill on Community Assistance for Navigation in the House.

Mr Sonowal introduced the bill in the House amidst uproar by the opposition members.

As the disruptions continued despite repeated pleas by the Speaker to maintain calm, he adjourned the House till 1500 hrs.

This was the third adjournment as the first was announced as a mark of respect to sitting MPs of the House. The House was adjourned for the second time when after reassembling, tumultuous scenes continued when Prime Minister Narendra Modi began introducing the new Ministers.

“Some people are pained to see children of farmers becoming ministers today. Some people are pained at seeing women as ministers and aren’t ready to allow their introduction as ministers,” the Prime Minister said.

When Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu’s repeated pleas to maintain the decorum failed, he adjourned the House till 1400 hrs.
