The family members of Suvarna Naik, the 27 year old woman who reportedly committed suicide have demanded that the police register a case of murder against her husband and in-laws instead of the dowry harassment and abetment of suicide case registered as of now.
Speaking to media persons, Suvarna’s sister Jyotsna Naik claimed that on 4th June, her husband Brijesh had called her up and threatened to kill her if she did not fulfill the dowry demand.
She alleged that Suvarna was strangulated while she was breast feeding her seven month old daughter.
Tara Kerkar of Savera Trust who has extended her support to Suvarna’s family said the marks on her neck clearly indicate that she was strangulated with the mangalsutra and that the death was not due to hanging.
Kerkar further alleged that the police were trying to hush up the matter as Brijesh’s maternal uncle is a deputy superintendent of police.
Suvarna’s father Kalidas revealed that Brijesh and his family were demanding either a plot of land or a bungalow as dowry from him and since he could not fulfill this demand, his daughter had to die.
Meanwhile, Brijesh, his younger brother Abhijeet and their parents Manohar and Sunita were remanded to five days police custody by the trial court.
