Republic Day celebrated in Goa

Panaji: Goa joined the rest of the nation in celebrating the 73rd Republic Day on Wednesday, with the state Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai unfurling the tricolour at the Parade Ground, Campal, here. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant was present on the occasion. The Governor, addressing the people, said he would take the ‘Swayampurna Goa Yatra’ within a year to villages and people to understand problems they face. He urged people to come out and take part in the assembly elections which are to be held next month.

Praising Goa, he said it is the only state which has implemented article 44 of the Indian constitution which is the uniform civil code and called upon to preserve the unique culture of the state. He said Covid vaccination has helped the state economy come back on the track. He said the tourism industry of the state had been badly hit by the Covid pandemic and expressed hope that it would be back to normal soon.

The Governor asked the bureaucrats to introspect and dedicate their service to the people. He congratulated scientists for indigenously developing vaccines for Covid-19 and showing to the world that India is second to none in producing medicines. He said the pandemic had helped the country to emerge as a strong and resilient nation in the face of adversity. Pillai expressed happiness that over 90 per cent of the state population have been vaccinated and congratulated health workers for the achievement. Republic Day was celebrated in other parts of the state as well
