Residents of Madkai under the banner of the Madkai Nagrik Kruti Samiti (MNKS) and Parampoi Citizens’ Forum have strongly opposed the move by Madkai communidade to lease out around two lakh square metres of land in the village to a temple trust headquartered in Canacona taluka.
Speaking to media persons MNKS president Mahabaleshwar Ghaisas disclosed that the communidade was in the process of handing over 1,99,650 square metres of land to the Canacona headquartered Swami Vidyadhiraj Teerth Charitable Trust of Partagal.
The Trust has apparently sought the land for educational, medical and social purpose thereby indicating that some school, nursing home is proposed to be set up.
However, Mahabaleshwar accused the Trust of lying to the communidade as it claimed not to have any land in its possession in Goa when in reality the trust is in possession of nearly three lakh square metres of land in Canacona.
Besides, the trust also has prime land located at Gogol in Margao where it has set up the Jivottam Math.
Mahabaleshwar disclosed that the Madkai communidade had ignored the local people who had paid money to it years back for communidade land to construct their own independent houses as many of them are compelled to live in crowded quarters of the houses belonging to their ancestors.
While on the one hand, local people are being denied the land that by right should come to them by virtue of being residents of the village, the communidade is pandering to the needs of moneyed sections from other villages who are seeking to grab the land through deceit and lies, he said.
Meanwhile, MNKS Secretary Sunil Shirokar also raised the issue of pollution caused by the industries set up in the vicinity of the village. “While on the one hand agricultural production as declined drastically and trees are wilting, on the other hand people are also suffering from skin diseases and there is a spurt in tuberculosis cases since the industrial units began functioning,” he said.
