The Goa State Election Commission is aiming to create a record by declaring the results of the City Corporation of Panaji the same day the elections are held, revealed State Election Commissioner M Modassir.
Addressing media persons, he said the elections are proposed to be held on 13th March and the results would be declared the same evening. Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) will be used for polling in the 30 wards of the Corporation.
Mr. Modassir said all arrangements have been made to declare the results within an hour of completing the entire voting process, which would include transporting the EVMs to the counting centre.
While polling will be held from 8 am to 5 pm, counting will commence at 8 pm said North Goa Collector R Mihir Vardhan who was also present for the media briefing.
To prevent large crowds gathering at the counting centre, the State Election Commission will put up five giant screens in different parts of the city to display the results as and when they are declared. Two sites for these screens are the city bus stand and Miramar beach.
In a bid to avoid long queues, officials have increased the polling booths from 30 to 70 in a bid to have not more than 500 voters registered per polling booth. However, delays are expected as each voter will be photographed and finger printed.
In all 32,090 voters are registered in the area of the City Corporation of Panaji with women outnumbering the men as there are 16,3030 registered female voters as against 15,787 male voters.
