RTI Activist accuses CM of lying on Lokayukta Amendments

Adv. Aires Rodrigues has today accused Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar of having blatantly lied to the people of Goa on those controversial and draconian amendments passed to the Goa Lokayukta Act passed in the last session of the Goa Legislative Assembly.

Adv. Rodrigues has stated that the Chief Minister on 31st January had falsely stated in the Goa Legislative Assembly that those amendments were suggested to him by Justice Sudershan Reddy.

Adv. Rodrigues has further stated that the Chief Minister now stands exposed in view of the revelation by Sudershan Reddy that he had met the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar for the first time yesterday.

Stating that Sudershan Reddy’s selection was manipulated and not transparent, Adv. Rodrigues has alleged that the role of Advocate General Atmaram Nadkarni in this selection was very suspicious as he could not have been entrusted the task of searching a Lokayukta.

Adv. Rodrigues has alleged that since Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar was keen on a Yes-man Lokayukta, the Government chose not to seek names for the post from the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and other High Court Chief Justices.

Stating that the entire consultation process for the Lokayukta was not meaningful as required by law, Adv. Rodrigues has demanded that the people of Goa should know at whose instance Sudershan Reddy’s name was considered.

Expressing doubts on Sudershan Reddy’s non-partisan credentials, Adv. Rodrigues pointed out that on July 12 last year Sudershan Reddy at Hyderabad had publicly expressed anger over the Telangana Congress MPs deciding to vote for Pranab Mukherjee in the presidential elections.

Pointing out to the current financial crisis being faced by the State, Adv. Rodrigues has questioned the wisdom of the Government in flying Sudershan Reddy to Goa by Business class despite the Prime Minister’s directive that all official travel should be only by Economy class.

Adv. Rodrigues also stated that despite ample government accommodation being available, the government lodged Sudershan Reddy and his entourage at Vivanta, a five-star hotel in Panaji.

Adv Rodrigues has recalled that Sudershan Reddy’s swearing in ceremony on 5th December 2005 as Chief Justice of Guwahati High Court was also a very controversial affair as he took a whole pack of over 100 fellow Andhraites to attend the function at the cost of Assam Government.

Reiterating the need for having a sturdy and a non-partisan Goa Lokayukta, Adv. Rodrigues has stated that it was very appalling that the Goa Government did not consider the distinguished retired Goan judges for the post.

Adv. Rodrigues has stated that Sudershan Reddy was not acceptable as the Lokayukta of Goa, as he being a high-handedly and secretly chosen Yes-man he would not be able to arrest the rampant corruption and mal administration in the State.
