A tragedy in the San Joao revelry threw Ponda city into disarray as chaos and confusion prevailed the entire evening with the road leading to Ponda from Margao blocked with a major traffic jam.
In the afternoon as San Joao revelers were moving in the city, tragedy struck as one – reportedly a Hindu person – drowned when he had jumped into a well as part of the celebrations.
What irked the people was the inordinate delay by the police to arrive at the site to conduct the panchanama and other formalities.
Irked by this behavior of the police, the public blocked traffic along the road leading to the city from Margao. The blockade that began at around 4 pm was only cleared in the night as vehicles were lined up across the Borim bridge and touched Camurlim of Salcete taluka.
The other route to Ponda via Shiroda was also totally blocked and the only access to the city was from Panjim.
Many people had to abandon their plans to go to Ponda and return without completing their work.
