Sardinha to lose out, Reginald and Furtado front runners for GPCC President

Though it was finalized that Member of Parliament (MP) Francisco Sardinha was to become the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president from Working President, it appears that the All India Congress Committee (AICC) might not go with Sardinha after all. Alexio Reginald Lourenco and Surendra Furtado are now the two front runners for the GPCC president post, since the AICC are adamant of putting a Catholic person to head the party.

While it appears that Sardinha’s responsibilities at the Centre are the reasons for this change in decision by the high command. Sources from AICC indicate that local Goans leaders do not want Sardinha to return to state-level politics. Also the Ram Sena stand taken by the MP had completely shocked the party high command.

Reginald has found favor on account of his recent tirades against the BJP-led government. However, AICC leaders feel that while he might have the desire to work aggressively for the party, they feel that it would need a more senior Catholic leader to head the party and might opt to make him the Deputy Leader of Opposition.

Furtado is the new name on the list of Catholic probables, owing to his past record with the party and his stint as a corporator. Furtado lost out on a Congress ticket during the recent Assembly elections, due to what sources say were match-fixing done between some politicians. However, it appears that his connections in Delhi have started to lobby extensively for him.
