New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Central Government to ensure proper care of the senior citizens living alone during the COVID-19 pandemic.
A division bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan and R Subhash Reddy directed the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment to ensure that old age pension of such senior citizens is received on time.
The court also averred that timely assistance should be provided at the request of senior citizens living alone during the Corona epidemic.
Justice Bhushan said that special care should be taken to supply essential goods and services to senior citizens living alone. State governments should also act promptly on requesting any cooperation.
The Apex Court guidelines were issued on petition of Rajya Sabha MP and Senior Advocate Dr Ashwani Kumar.
