SC issues notices to Goa Govt on renewal of mining licenses

The Supreme Court today issued notice to the Goa Government and several mining companies, including Sesa Sterlite, on four petitions challenging the renewal of mining licences to 89 firms against the judgment of the apex court.

According to the petitions, the Supreme Court had last year ordered that all mining licences given for fifty years and expired in 2007 shall not be given automatic renewal. The concerned mining companies should stand in queue along with other applicants and apply to get environment clearance afresh. However, the Goa government has bypassed this order and allowed the miners to operate without auction or competitive bid, counsel for public interest organization Goa Foundation, Prashant Bhushan, submitted before a bench headed by Justice J S Khehar.

When the issue was raised earlier before the Bombay high court, the petitions were dismissed on a technical ground. Therefore, the foundation filed two appeals as the state government did not appeal against the high court order.
