Washington, May 12 (GCCurrentAffairs) The Senate Minority Leader and a member of the Democratic Party, Chuck Schumer, urged US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo ahead of a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to warn the Russian leadership against any attempts to meddle in the country’s elections, in particular, the upcoming 2020 presidential election.
Pompeo will meet with Putin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during his visit to Russia from May 13-14.
“During your meeting with Vladimir Putin, it is critical that you warn him that any action to interfere in our elections will be met with an immediate and robust response,” Schumer wrote in a letter to Pompeo, released on the former’s Facebook and Twitter pages.
According to Schumer, Trump’s approach toward dealing with Putin must change.
“I urge you to make absolutely clear to President Putin that interference in U.S. elections will not be tolerated,” Schumer stressed in the letter.
Russia’s alleged meddling in US affairs, including in the 2016 presidential election that resulted in Trump’s victory, has never been proven. Yet, the Democrats continue to insist that a collusion between “Russian operatives” and Trump associates did take place during the US presidential campaign.
The US Justice Department released in mid-April the redacted version of the long-awaited report by Special Counsel Robert Mueller summarizing the outcome of the investigation into allegations of Trump-Russia collusion and Russia’s alleged interference in the 2016 US election. According to the document, the investigation did not find any evidence of collusion between Russia and Trump’s campaign team, but still accused Russia of attempting to interfere in the election.
