New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Jyotiraditya Scindia on Thursday expressed concern over spike in child marriages in the country during the Corona pandemic and sought to increase government’s participation for its prevention.
Taking up the issue during the Zero Hour in Rajya Sabha, Mr Scindia said the social evil still exists on a wide scale in states like Maharashtra, Telangana and Karnataka. ‘Mass awareness against the crime needs to increased while the government has to make stricter rules and ensure its implementation to prevent it,’ he stated. There is a need to evaluate the child marriage at the state level and action taken at the district level, the Minister added.
Unfortunately, Mr Scindia said, during the pandemic, the schools were closed which adversely impacted the studies leading to a spike in child marriages.
