Sub Divisional Magistrate Margao has directed the general manager of Majorda Beach Resort to remove sand bags at Majorda beach within seven days or face closure of the hotel for non-compliance of the order.
For the last few years, sand bags have been placed at Majorda beach in what was apparently an attempt to divert the flow of the rivulet which had resulted in not only erosion of soil at the beach but also inundation of properties upstream the rivulet.
The Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority, following a complaint by locals, had noted that the hotel was carrying out illegal activities under the Coastal Regulation Zone notification as the activity was within 100 mts of the high tide.
The Sub Divisional Magistrate had earlier on June 9, 2007 directed the hotel to remove the sand bags that were blocking the culvert and the management apparently removed some bags.
However the current monsoon season has revealed that the sand bags that were covered by sand were not removed as they are now exposed to the naked eye and the Sub Divisional Magistrate has now directed the hotel management to remove these bags within a week.
