Pension for seafarers has been enhanced from the present Rs. 200 to Rs. 500 announced Commissioner for NRI Affairs, Eduardo Faleiro while speaking at a function held to observe the International Day of Seafarer.
He disclosed that the Union Ministry of Shipping has already initiated the process to pay the enhanced pension to all seafarers and also pointed out that the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 is likely to be ratified by the government shortly.
Considered the “Bill of Rights of Seafarers”, the convention will improve the working conditions of seafarers many of whom, he said are currently exploited going by the complaints received by his office.
While pointing out that Goan seafarers are highly regarded the world over as well trained and dependable, he said the seafarers too should protect themselves by keeping a copy of the contract at home with the family and also joining an union.
He acknowledged that piracy is a growing menace worldwide and appreciated the fact that the Indian Navy was one of the few forces in the world to act decisively against pirates.
