Mumbai: Erasing Tuesday’s gain, the BSE Sensex on Thursday nosedived by 542 pts to open at 31,466.33 tracking weak global markets after Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell warned of extended economic weakness due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The nifty of national stock exchange too fell by 170 pts to 9,213.95.
The Nifty registered intraday high and low at 9,279.10 and 9,197 pts respectively.
The Sensex registered intraday high and low at 31,628.56 and 31,344.50 pts respectively.
The mid-cap was up by 0.47 pc and small-cap by 0.01 pc.
The sectoral indices include IT, Bankex, Power, Finance and Industrials dragged the market.
In scrips, NTPC, Infosys, Power, Tech Mahindra and IndusInd Bank declined.
In 30 scrips, 8 advanced while 22 declined.
The losers were NTPC by 3.98 pc to Rs 89.30, Infosys by 3.86 pc to Rs 667.15, Powergrid by 3.12 pc to Rs 161.45, Tech Mahindra by 2.83 pc to Rs 529 and IndusInd Bank by 2.78 pc to Rs 435.95.
The gainers were Bajaj finance by 3.40 pc to Rs 2234.65, Kotak Bank by 1.58 pc to Rs 1205.30, Nestle India by 1.40 pc to Rs 16,750 and ITC by 0.85 pc to Rs 166.80.
As many as 18 companies including Biocon, Escorts, and Manappuram Finance are scheduled to announce their results today.
