Rome, May 15 (GCSports) Serena Williams withdrew from the Italian Open ahead of her second-round match against sister Venus Williams due to a recurring left knee injury.
“I must withdraw from the Italian Open due to pain in my left knee,” Serena said in a statement on Tuesday.
‘I will miss the fans and competition at one of my favorite tournaments. I’ ll be concentrating on rehab and look forward to seeing you all at the French Open and next year in Rome’, she added.
As a result of this latest withdrawal, Venus advanced into the third round via a walkover.
It’s the third straight tournament that the 37-year-old Serena has exited from due to physical problems.
Serena is a four-time champion in the Italian capital and she started her 2019 Rome campaign with a solid 6-4, 6-2 victory win against qualifier Rebecca Peterson, to book the highly-anticipated clash against Venus.
Serena’s next tournament is scheduled to be Roland Garros, which begins on May 26.
