Officials of Tourism Department carried out a sham demolition at Cavelossim on Tuesday where they deliberately went to demolish illegal portions of a beach shack without the required equipment.
Following a report submitted by the department officials, demolition of the shack erected at Cavelossim beach by Cruz Cardozo leader of the Beach Shack Owners Association in Goa, was ordered.
The report clearly stated that the shack was erected in violation of the terms and conditions laid down by the authorities. It noted that instead of erecting the shack with natural material like bamboo and wooden rafters, Cruz had used heavy steel to extend the shack beyond the permitted area.
What was surprising was the fact that despite knowing the heavy steel would have to be cut to demolish the illegal extension, the officials arrived for the demolition with only pick axes and koitas which at best, could be used to demolish wooden structures. The end result was that the demolition squad returned without demolishing anything except removing a few chairs.
The district administration could not be faulted as it had provided police protection for carrying out the demolition and the blame lies squarely with the officials of the Tourism Department.
Although Assistant Director of the department Jai Krishna Sangodkar assured that the demolition would be carried out shortly he did not fix any date for the same.
The question is whether the department will pay the cost of the aborted demolition drama or will it ask the officers responsible for it to cough up the amount?
