Sikkim CM PS Tamang extends warm greetings on the National Panchayati Raj Day

Gangto: The Minister PS Tamang has extended warm greetings and salutation to the members of Panchayati Raj Institutions on the occasion of National Panchayati Raj Day.

National Panchayati Raj Day is celebrated on April 24 every year and signifies the decentralization of power to the grassroots by the institutionalization of the Panchayati Raj through the Constitution (73rd Amendment) Act, 1992, which came into force on April 24, 1993. This date thus marks a defining moment in the history of decentralization of political power to the grassroots level, he states.

Recently, our government has taken an innovative decision to hold the panchayat elections on a non-partisan basis by amending the Sikkim Panchayat Act to usher in true democracy in grassroots governance.

The Panchayati Raj Institutions have been able to acquire the status and dignity of viable and responsive people’s bodies with adequate representation, devolution of powers, and financial resources.

Chief Minister also congratulates the recipients of various awards presented by the Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj on this occasion. The awards recognize the achievements of our panchayats and further empower and motivate them further, he has states.
