Moscow, Mar 3 (GCCurrentAffairs) The situation in Syria has noticeably stabilised as the Islamic State terrorist group (IS, banned in Russia) has been destroyed, but it is premature to talk about the final elimination of the terrorist threat, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.
“After a number of successful operations by government forces with the support of the Russian Aerospace Forces, the situation in Syria ‘on the ground’ has noticeably stabilised. The Islamic State as an organization claiming ‘quasi-statehood’ has been destroyed,” Lavrov said in an interview with the Kuwait News Agency.
“However, it is premature to speak about the complete elimination of the terrorist threat in Syria,” Lavrov added.
The Russian minister emphasized that much remains to be done to neutralize the “sleeping” cells of radical armed groups in the war-torn country.
