She could not complete her schooling due to family’s difficult financial situation. She has studied till 7th standard and then had to drop out. She wants her daughters to pursue education and become strong, bold and independent. Jayanti has an optimistic view towards life. In conversation with Goachronicle.com.

Goachronicle.com: Do you think we have much growth opportunities in Goa?

Jayanti: We do have much growth opportunities in Goa. It is just that people do not have an eye to look for them. If there were no opportunities, how is possible that people from other states of India have come to Goa in search of jobs and have flourished. If there were no opportunities, they would have moved on to other states or would have gone back to their home towns. But the fact that they are here and working makes it evident that we do have opportunities here. But we do not want to look for them.

Goachronicle.com: How has COVID-19 impacted your life?

Jayanti: The 3 month long lockdown that was imposed from March to June due to COVID-19 left me idle for the first 2 months. I did not have any earning. We did not have much savings that would be sufficient to feed the family for a long time. Though the lockdown in Goa was relaxed in May, I could not go for work due to travel constraints. I live in Keri and work in Ponda. I had no mode of transport to travel. I then decided to do other odd jobs in Keri to earn some money so that I could feed my family.

Goachronicle.com: How do you think the Chief Minister of Goa has handled the pandemic situation?

Jayanti: Chief Minister Mr. Pramod Sawant could not handle the pandemic situation well. When there were no cases in Goa, he continued the lockdown. But when the number of cases started growing he did not impose any restrictions to curb the spread of COVID-19 in Goa. Also, he did not take any steps to help the underprivileged.

Goachronicle.com: If given the power to bring about a change, what will you do?

Jayanti: If I get a chance, I will work for the people. I believe that people in power in the government are obligated to serve the people because they are elected by the people. If given a chance, I would serve the people. I will work for the betterment of the underprivileged.

Goachronicle.com: Is India heading in the right direction?

Jayanti: Ever since Mr. Narendra Modi has taken charge as the Prime Minster of India, I can say that the country is heading in the right direction. He has brought about many changes in the system that has worked in favour of the people of India. But this is also a fact that Modi alone cannot work towards development of the country. It is also our responsibility to work towards the betterment of our country.
