Some screening of OTT content required, some platforms even show porn: SC

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday said some screening of over the top (OTT) content is needed as in some cases, even pornography is being shown.

A bench of Justice Ashok Bhushan was hearing a plea on the controversy surrounding Amazon Prime Video’s latest show ‘Tandav’ which allegedly hurt religious sentiments and showed objectionable content.

The bench observed, “We are of the view that some screening of OTT content should take place.’

‘In fact, some platforms even show pornography,’ the Apex Court added.

The bench asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, to place before it the recent guidelines of the government to regulate social media platforms and adjourned the matter till tomorrow.

Last week, the government brought new guidelines for social media and OTT platforms to ensure compliance with local laws.

Amazon Prime’s Commercial Head, Aparna Purohit moved the apex court challenging the Allahabad High Court’s February 25 order declining anticipatory bail to her in the criminal cases registered in connection with the web series “Tandav”.
