A longstanding disagreement between a father and son residing at Corjuem, Aldona, led the son to allegedly beat his father to death with a glass bottle and a chair on Wednesday evening.
Francisco, 76, and his son Mario, 46, were the only occupants of the Borges’ home in Podwal-Corjuem near Aldona Bridge since Mario gave up his job in Dubai a year-and-a-half ago.
Mario’s two sisters are married, his brother is employed abroad and since their mother died a month ago, Francisco refused to let his son return to Dubai for work, said Mapusa police.
“Mario has been unemployed since his return from Dubai and this would often lead to heated arguments between the father and son as Mario wished to work abroad but Francisco did not want to be left alone in Goa,” said police.
So the Borges’ neighbours did not suspect anything amiss when the father and son got into another bout of intense arguments lasting over an hour on Wednesday evening.
Police said that in the course of the argument, Mario allegedly hit his father on the head with a soda glass bottle. As Francisco lay bleeding on the floor, Mario allegedly hit him again with a chair. This, police said, left the father unconscious.
Mario then sat in the balcony from where he told some neighbours passing by that he had hit his father, said police.
The neighbours immediately called the 108 ambulance service. Officials in the ambulance service in turn informed the police on arriving at the scene of the brutal assault that had left Francisco dead.
A police team led by PI Rajesh Kumar rushed to the scene and conducted the panchanama before sending Francisco’s body to the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim, for a postmortem.
Mario, on the other hand, has been remanded to five days police custody in the case of murder.
