Union Minister for Human Resources Kapil Sibal discussed in detail the Medium of Instruction issue with all the Goans who had rushed to Delhi over the matter and a decision is likely to be announced in two days after discussing it with All India Congress Committee President Sonia Gandhi.
Chief Minister Digambar Kamat along with quite a number of his Ministers and MLAs, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Subhash Shirodkar, Mauvin Godinho who is heading the Election Committee of the Congress in Goa and representatives of Forum for Right to Children’s Education (FORCE) were camping in the national capital for three days.
In fact, their stay was extended due to the fact that Kapil Sibal was out of station which fact could have been verified before leaving for the national capital.
The Congress leaders expressed confidence that the issue would be resolved to enable the government to provide grants to primary schools in English medium also. However, the final announcement to this effect will be made in two days.
Although the provisions of Right to Education Act will be quoted, more particularly the words “wherever practicable” while deciding the medium of instruction, the real reason behind the decision is pure vote bank politics.
Supporters of the English medium in the Congress argued that the demand has come from loyal Congress voters, who may be antagonized enough to vote against the party at the elections which are just round the corner.
Maintaining status quo, they said would actually help the Opposition as the loyal Congress voters would interpret it to mean that the party they support does not listen to their demand.
