Chennai, MAY 31 (GCCurrentAffairs) The Opposition DMK in Tamil Nadu has convened a meeting of its district secretaries, MPs and MLAs here on June three, coinciding with the birth anniversary of late party Chief M Karunanidhi.
A statement issued by DMK General Secretary K Anbazhagan on Friday said that the meeting, to be held at party headquarters ‘Anna Arivalayam’ at 1000 hrs, would be chaired by party president M K Stalin.
All district secretaries, MPs and MLAs were asked to attend the meeting without fail. Though the agenda of the meeting was to discuss about the steps to be taken for the development of the party, it was expected to decide the
strategy to be adopted by the DMK in Parliament and the State Assembly sessions, expected to be convened in the first week of June.
It may be recalled that the DMK, under the leadership of Mr Stalin, faced its first test–the recent Lok Sabha and Assembly bypoll to 22 seats–and emerged victorious.
The DMK-led Front won 37 of the 38 parliamentary seats for which elections were held (elections to Vellore was rescinded), with the DMK bagging all the 19 seats it contested, while its allies bagged the remaining seats.
DMK also emerged as the third largest party in Lok Sabha.
In the Assembly bypoll, the DMK bagged 13 seats, taking its strength in the 234-member Assembly to 101 and that of the combined strength of Opposition to 109 (Congress-7, IUML-1) after the resignation of Congress Nanguneri MLA H Vasanth Kumar following his election to Lok Sabha.
