The much-touted Sunburn Festival normally held at the Candolim Beach in Goa is expected to be shifted to South Goa beaches this year, according to decision taken by the Goa Tourism Minister in lieu of the large number of tourists that throng North Goa beaches during the Christmas Weekend.
Tourism Minister Dilip Parulekar stated that this year we have decided that if we are to give permission to the organizers of the Sunburn Festival, then they would need to host the music festival in South Goa as North Goa sees a lot of tourists, during the festive season and at times it could be a security concern. Also moving the event to South Goa could also help drive tourists to South Goa.
Whether this will be accepted by the organizers Percept is yet to be seen. Sunburn Festival has often received stiff resistance from certain activists quarters and also had its share of controversies including a death of a young girl due to drug overdose. BJP when in Opposition opposed the event, now however it appears to see it as a major draw for tourism in the state.
