The Supreme Court on Tuesday took exception to a lawyer appearing before it through video conference without wearing a shirt, the second such instance in the recent past.
A Bench headed by Justice L Nageswara Rao berated the counsel for his reckless conduct.
“What is this behaviour? Even after 8 months now you are so reckless?” Justice Rao proceeded to ask.
The Bench, which also comprised Justice Hemant Gupta, was hearing a suo motu case relating to the spread of COVID-19 in child protection homes.
This was the second time a lawyer was appearing before the apex court without his shirt. In October, a lawyer had appeared without a shirt, inviting reprimand from Justice DY Chandrachud, who was heading the Bench in that matter.
The lawyer had later clarified that he had taken all precautions by switching off his computer camera before the hearing since he was attending a religious function of his child on Vijayadashami. However, the Supreme Court control room turned on his camera from their end, it was stated.
“What is this behaviour? Even after 8 months now you are so reckless?”
The Supreme Court had, in June 2020, reprimanded another lawyer who appeared via video conference while lying on his bed, wearing a t-shirt. The lawyer had later tendered unconditional apology which the Court had accepted.
