Tanker Topples, Dabolim Airport Grounded


A tanker of Indian Oil Corporation carrying nearly 6,000 lts of Aviation Turbine Fuel toppled on the Dabolim airport runway at around 9:20 pm on 23rd October affecting operations for nearly 24 hours.
The Naval authorities swung into action and evacuated the driver of the ill fated tanker, towed the tanker away and also washed the fuel that had spilled on the runway due to which operations were suspended as there was the risk of the aircrafts skidding due to the fuel.
Operations commenced only at around 11 pm on 24th October.

The tanker was heading towards the civil terminal to refuel aircrafts parked there when the accident occurred.
Meanwhile, the accident resulted in the maiden direct flight from Goa to Saudi for the Haj pilgrims as the Boeing 747 specially chartered for the purpose could not take off at its scheduled departure which was 7 pm.
Besides, 127 passengers of the Bangalore bound flight were also stranded at the airport for nearly five hours.
