Thailand confirms 35th case of coronavirus infection

Bangkok, Feb 17 (IECurrentAffairs) Thailand confirmed 35th case of coronavirus infection in the country in a Chinese woman whose entire family of nine has tested positive for the virus, health authorities reported on Monday .
“We registered another, 35th, case of coronavirus infection. The patient is a 60-year-old quarantined tourist from China. She became infected from one of her family members of 9 people, all the other family members also fell sick and are being treated. They are taken into account by previous statistics,” Sukhum Kanchanapimai, the health ministry’s permanent secretary said at a news conference.
The health ministry spokesman noted that 15 people have so far been declared recovered and discharged from under medical care, according to Bangkok Post. Kanchanapimai then went on to announce increased screenings for people arriving from other countries with coronavirus cases, namely Japan and Singapore.
“The control system has been strengthened at the entrance to Thailand in international airports, sea and river ports and border crossing aimed at identifying symptoms caused by coronavirus infection in people arriving from China, Japan and Singapore – the three countries in which at the moment the highest risk of infection,” he said.
The new strain of coronavirus was first detected in China’s Wuhan, located in the province of Hubei, in December and has since spread to more than 25 countries. In mainland China, the virus has already resulted in more than 1,700 fatalities, with over 70,000 people infected so far. Outside of China, more than 800 people have contracted the virus, including two cases in Russia.
