Goa police have arrested a 50-year old Tiatr artiste for allegedly stabbing his wife to death, suspecting infidelity and setting the body ablaze to destroy evidence in the wee hour of Friday morning. According to the police, the suspect chopped the body of the victim after he found that it did not fit in the travel bag and drove nearly a kilometre and a half before disposing it.
The arrested Anthony Fernandes, a script writer with the famed Tiatr (Musical Theatre) suspected his 44-year old wife Fermina alias Fiona Fernandes having illegitimate affair, while she was working in Syria. “Apparently he (Anthony) claims of seeing his wife speaking to someone over the phone due to which the couple had an argument.
In a fit of rage Anthony took a kitchen knife and stabbed his wife at-least thrice and killed her. Later, he tried to pack the body into a travel bag, but when it did not fit, he chopped the body at the knees and stuffed it in the bag. He drove nearly one and a half kilometres on a scooter before disposing it near a local TB hospital, poured petrol and burnt it,” Police Inspector CI Patil of Margao police station said. Later after locals reported of finding the burnt body lying openly, the police visited the spot and retrieved it along with the help of medical services.
Suspicion drew on Anthony, after the Antony’s son-in-law Sheldon Costa independently filed a missing complaint of his mother-in-law on the insistence of his wife. “When we showed him the body we had found earlier during the day and he immediately identified his mother-in-laws body,” investigators said. The police quickly swooped to Anthony’s residence to question why he had not reported his wife missing.
“He was caught off-guard by our sudden arrival, giving inconsistent and evasive replies,” the police added. The police immediately detained Anthony on suspicion and questioned him at the station. During the course of which he admitted of killing his wife as he suspected her to be infidel, he also admitted that after he had killed his wife he purchased the fuel to burn the body from a nearby petrol pump.
The police have an FIR against Anthony under murder (IPC 302) and destruction of evidence (IPC 201), he will be produced before the local court on Saturday.
