Chennai: Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit has given his assent for the Bill, providing 10.5 quota for Vanniyars in education and jobs from within the quota for MBCs and Denotified Communities.
After getting the Governor’s assent, the Act was notified in the Government Gazzette. The Special Reservation Act of 2021 has created two more groups — one covering 25 MBCs and 68 DNCs and another covering the remaining 22 MBCs.
The enactment of the Bill fulfilled the oft-repeated demand of the Vanniyar-dominated PMK, which was one of the key allies of the ruling AIADMK, and inked the seat sharing agreement last evening, settling for 23 seats, saying it agreed for less numbers as the government conceded to its long pending demand of providing quota for Vanniyars.
The Bill was passed by voice vote in the State Assembly on Friday barely a few hours before the Election Commission announced the Assembly poll schedule.
