TN Village lights up over Kamala Harris’s assumption to US Office as Vice-President

Chennai: The residents of non-descript Thulasendrapuram village – the ancestral village of United States Vice President-elect Kamala Harris in Tiruvarur district of Tamil Nadu conducted special puja at “Sri Dharma Sastha Sevaga Perumal Temple” on Wednesday for the well-being of Kamala Harris, prior to her assumption of office.

Thulasendrapuram is the ancestral village of Kamala Harris, as her maternal grandfather P.V.Gopalan, a former Indian diplomat was born here. Gopalan and his wife Rajam Gopalan left the village in the 1930’s along with his family to Chennai, where Shyamala Gopalan, mother of Kamala, was born.

Shyamala moved to the United States at the age of 19 in 1958 for studies, where she married Donald J.Harris, a Jamaican in 1963. Kamala Harris was born at Oakland in California in 1964.

The residents of Thulasendrapuram village were in a jubilant mood and distributed sweets among them.

Special pujas, including ablutions were performed to the presiding deity of Sri Dharma Sastha Sevaga Perumal Temple, the ancestral temple of Kamala Harris for her well being and success in all her endeavors.

The village wore a festive look with many residents drawing colourful “rangoli kolams” in front of their houses to show their love and affection to Kamala.

J.Sudhakar, the “Nattamai” (traditional head) of the village said they want Kamala Harris to visit the village after assuming office. We hope that she will take the Indo-US relations to the next high level. She is a big inspiration for the young generation, he said.
