Tokyo Olympics: PM congratulates Mirabai Chanu for winning Silver medal in weightlifting

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday congratulated Mirabai Chanu for winning the silver medal in weightlifting at Tokyo Olympics 2020.

In a tweet, the Prime Minister said, “Could not have asked for a happier start to @Tokyo2020! India is elated by @mirabai_chanu’s stupendous performance. Congratulations to her for winning the Silver medal in weightlifting. Her success motivates every Indian. #Cheer4India #Tokyo2020”

Chanu clinched silver medal in the women’s 49 kg weightlifting category at the Tokyo 2020 as India won a medal on the first day of the Olympic Games for the first time in its history, in Tokyo on Saturday.

The 26-year-old lifted a total of 202 kg (87kg+115kg) and became the first Indian weightlifter to win a silver at Olympics.

Chanu’s win comes two decades after Indian trailblazer Karnam Malleswari became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal. Malleswari won a bronze medal in the women’s 69kg weight category at the 2000 Sydney Games.
