Tourists are now arriving in caravans to beat the high rates charged by hotels during the peak Christmas season in Goa and many such vehicles can be seen parked in the open spaces around Agonda in Canacona taluka.
Tourists, particularly from European nations are driving all the way to Goa in their caravans and presently there are more than a dozen such vehicles seen in the village, while more are expected.
In fact, last year during the Christmas Week which also includes the New Year, nearly 40 caravans were seen in Canacona around Agonda and Palolem, the two popular beaches in this taluka.
For the visitors, the abandoned site of a hotel project, which is under litigation and is currently manned only by the security guards, is an ideal place to park their vehicles.
However, locals complained that these caravans dirty the place as they generate a lot of garbage which is not dealt with and most often is dumped in the nearby rivulet. The security guards posted at the site also are apparently making a quick buck by charging varying amounts to allow the caravans to be parked there.
