Tribunal Will Fix Issues on Mhadei Dispute: Centre

The Union government turned down Rajya Sabha Member Shantaram Naik’s plea to frame the terms of reference for the Mhadei Tribunal constituted at the instance of the Supreme Court to settle the dispute between Goa and Karnataka over the Mhadei waters.
Union Minister for Water Resources Pawan Kumar Bansal pointed out that the tribunal being a judicial entity would frame the issues itself and suggested that the Goa government file its application before the tribunal to frame issues with reference to its objections to the Karnataka government’s proposal.

Shantaram Naik had asked the ministry to fix the terms of reference so that the water flow into Goa is not obstructed following Karnataka’s plans to construct dams on Mhadei’s tributaries Kalsa and Bhandura.
As Chief Minister Digambar Kamat could not attend the meeting convened by the Union Water Resources Minister, Shantaram Naik pleaded Goa’s case.
