WASHINGTON, June 7 (GCCurrentAffairs) President Donald Trump is trying to bully Mexico with his new plan to get the US southern neighbor to block refugee migrations originating in Guatemala, Human Rights First’s Eleanor Acer said in a press release.
Earlier in the day, the Washington Post reported that Mexican officials had pledged to send some 6,000 National Guard troops to the southern border with Guatemala to contain the flow of Central American immigrants as part of the deal to avert escalating US tariffs.
“Trump is trying to bully another country into endangering the lives of vulnerable men, women, and children, who want nothing more than to live in freedom and safety,” Acer, who is the group’s Refugee Protection Senior Director, said on Thursday. “Mexico and Guatemala are not – in a legal or practical sense – safe countries for many refugees.”
Trump’s plan would make a mockery of US law and treaty commitments and would send refugees back to locations where their lives would be threatened, Acer warned.
Last week, Trump said the United States would impose a 5 percent tariff on all goods imported from Mexico beginning on June 10 and increase the tariffs to 25 percent by October unless Mexico alleviates the illegal immigration crisis.
US and Mexican officials met on Thursday for a second day of talks on the tariffs. White House spokesperson Sarah Sanders told CNBC that the administration plans to move forward with the tariffs which are due to come into force on Monday.
