Trump unveils US Space Force flag

Washington: US President Donald Trump has unveiled the official flag for the nation’s Space Force, the newest branch of the military.

Trump held an Oval Office ceremony on Friday where the flag was unfurled, signing a proclamation denoting Armed Forces Day alongside military leaders, The Hill reported.

“Space is going to be the future, both in terms of defense and offense and so many other things,” Trump said. “And already, from what I’m hearing and based on reports, we’re now the leader in space.”

“This is really to unfurl the flag, but we’ve been doing this now for quite awhile,” he added.

According to the White House, the dark blue flag, featuring a delta wing, an elliptical orbit and three large stars are intended to symbolize the Space Force’s purpose of organizing, training and equipping. It is the first new military flag to be unveiled in 72 years.

Trump coined the name “Space Force” in 2018, but the idea for a separate branch of the military for space originated as a bipartisan House idea in 2017.

The sixth and the youngest branch of the US Armed Forces, the Space Force was officially established as an independent military service in December 2019, when Trump signed the annual defence policy bill.

During the ceremony, Trump also touted that the United States is “building right now incredible military equipment.”

“We have, I call it the Super Duper Missile, and I heard the other night 17 times faster than what they have right now,” he said.
