Following a directive from the Sub-Divisional magistrate, Calangute Police on Friday arrested Chandrawati Korgaonkar and her son Sagar Korgaonkar holding them responsible for the death of Reshma Korgaonkar who was reportedly found hanging from a dupatta in her house.
Initially the police had registered a case of suicide based on the statements of Reshma’s husband and other relatives. However, her parents protested and insisted that it was a case of murder.
As the death occurred within seven years of marriage, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate also investigated the case and found some glaring discrepancies and circumstantial evidence suggesting that the case was not what it appeared to be.
Under the Indian law, even if the woman commits suicide, if it is established that she was driven to it by her husband and/or his relatives’ behavior, the ones responsible for leading the victim to commit suicide are held guilty.
The Sub-Divisional Magistrate directed the Calangute Police to register a case of dowry death following which the police arrested the decease Reshma’s husband and mother-in-law.
