Education Minister Babush Monserrate is facing a revolt in his camp for the ensuing City Corporation of Panjim elections, as Uday Madkaikar has filed his nomination papers from ward No. 17 where Babush has fielded Prajat Vainginkar.
Although Uday Madkaikar was initially named as his candidate by Babush, he was subsequently dropped as charges of corruption and manipulation in the allotment of shops in the new market were leveled against Uday who was the chairman of the Corporation’s market committee.
In fact, two complaints were lodged against Uday in this regard. One Altaf Jamadar had complained that Uday had received money from him for allotment of shop which was given to somebody else. In the second complaint lodged by Shaikh Mustak it was alleged that a shop allotted to him has been transferred to somebody else.
Uday has dismissed these charges against him as “politically motivated” and said that he was contesting the civic elections because the people from his ward have forced him. At the last elections held in 2006 Uday who was part of Babush’s panel, had won by a margin of around 200 votes.
He clarified that he was not in any way challenging Babush and said that he was not contesting the ensuing elections due to any rivalry, but only because the voters in his ward had forced him to file his papers.
