Villagers from Uguem and surrounding villages staged a rally on Monday demanding that the government immediately shelve its plan to construct a bypass for trucks carrying mining ore through Uguem.
Over 700 villagers marched from Uguem village to the Sanguem bus stand along with local MLA Vassudev Gaonkar, Sanguem Parish Priest Fr. Patrick D’Cunha and Uguem Chaplain Fr. Agapito D’Cunha.
The villagers argued that not only will the bypass affect their lives but many houses will also be demolished to construct it. As the bypass will be through the fields on which the villagers depend for their livelihood, they said their future will be totally bleak if the bypass is constructed.
Pointing out that following protests from Tilamol, the authorities re-aligned the bypass through their village, they said the government could not change the alignment once again as they were protesting against it.
Later Uguem Bachao Samiti President Anil Zangale submitted a memorandum to Sanguem Mamlatdar in the presence of Uguem’s acting Sarpanch Devidas Naik, panch Xavier Furtado, Sanguem Municipal Council chairperson Sanjay Raikar, ZP Member Navnath Naik and Vassudev Gaonkar.
The protest ended with a meeting at the Sanguem bus stand where various speakers urged the government to listen to the people’s demand and scrap the bypass.
