UN chief hails Azerbaijan-Armenia meeting over Nagorno-Karabakh

UNITED NATIONS, Jan 17 (GCCurrentAffairs) United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday welcomed a meeting between the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, said his spokesman.

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov and his Armenian counterpart, Zohrab Mnatsakanyan, held a meeting on Wednesday in Paris.

“The secretary-general appreciates the continued commitment of the sides to finding a negotiated and peaceful solution to the long-standing Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and particularly welcomed the ministers’ agreement on the need to take concrete measures to prepare the populations for peace,” said Guterres’ spokesman Stephane Dujarric in a statement.

Guterres reiterated the UN’s full support for the important mediation efforts of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe Minsk Group.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have been locked in a bitter dispute over the mountainous region of Nagorno-Karabakh. The two countries first clashed over the matter in 1988, when the region claimed independence from Azerbaijan to join Armenia.
