Uniodised salt banned in India

Sale of uniodised salt is restricted for direct human consumption under the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restriction on Sales) Regulation, the Lok Sabha was informed on Friday.

In a written reply, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Ashwini Kumar Choubey said as per the Regulation, “no person shall sell or offer or expose for sale or have in his premises for the purpose of sale, the common salt, for direct human consumption, unless the same is iodised.”

Provided that common salt may be sold or exposed for sale or stored for sale for iodisation, iron fortification, animal use, preservation, manufacturing medicines, and industrial use, under proper label declarations, as specified in the Regulation of Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labeling) regulations, 2011, Mr Choubey added.
