Union Minister for Shipping G K Vasan reportedly assured the all party delegation led by Goa’s Chief Minister Digambar Kamat that the Khariwado issue will be considered sympathetically by his ministry thereby giving hopes to the people of the area living under the threat of their houses being demolished.
The Goa delegation explained the whole issue to the union minister and appealed to him to denotify the Kharewado area as coming under the jurisdiction of the Mormugao Port Trust. The minister gave them a very patient hearing.
He reportedly told them that the Union government was committed to the welfare of the people and therefore development cannot come at the cost of the people. “The port cannot be developed by displacing local people,” he is learnt to have told the delegation.
The all-party delegation included Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha, Revenue Minister Jose Philip D’Souza, Tourism Minister Nilkant Halarnkar, BJP MLAs Milind Naik and Francis D’Souza, Transport Minister Ramkrishna alias Sudin Dhavlikar, Chief Secretary Sanjay Srivastava and MPT Chairman P Mara Pandiyan.
Significantly, though claimed to be an all party delegation, there was only one MLA of the Congress – the chief minister, while both the BJP and the NCP was represented by two MLAs each and the MGP had only one MLA.
