US Senator Warner introduces bill to avoid new govt shutdowns: Statement

New York, Jan 23 (GCCurrentAffairs) A new legislation would prevent government shutdowns in the future by activating funding to all federal departments and agencies except Congress and the White House, US Senator Mark Warner’s press office said in a release.

“Today, US Sen. Mark R. Warner (D-VA) introduced legislation to put an end to future government shutdowns and protect federal government workers from being used as pawns in policy negotiations,” the release said on Tuesday. “The Stop STUPIDITY (Shutdowns Transferring Unnecessary Pain and Inflicting Damage in the Coming Years) Act would fund all aspects of the government except for the legislative branch and the Executive Office of the President.”

By cutting off funding from Congress and the White House, the bill would force US officials to negotiate a solution to a possible shutdown faster and avoid risking the US economy and hurting federal employees, the release explained.

In the case of a new government shutdown, the legislation would automatically renew federal funding at the same rate as in the preceding fiscal year and adjust for inflation, to keep the government functioning, the release said.

The US federal government has been partially shut down since December 22 as a result of a funding dispute between President Donald Trump and Congress. Trump has asked Congress to authorize $5.7 billion to build a wall along the US border with Mexico, but Democrats have refused to meet the demand.

Some 800,000 federal workers have been furloughed or have been working without pay during the shutdown, according to published reports.
