US will donate ventilators to India, cooperate on vaccine development: Trump

Washington: US President Donald Trump on Saturday announced that his administration will donate ventilators to India to help in fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

Trump also said that US and India are working together to develop a vaccine for COVID-19.

‘I am proud to announce that the United States will donate ventilators to our friends in India. We stand with India and @narendramodi during this pandemic. We’re also cooperating on vaccine development. Together we will beat the invisible enemy! ,’ the US President said in a tweet.

While the US has the highest number of novel coronavirus cases and deaths globally, India on Friday crossed the COVID-19 tally of China where the virus emerged late last year, registering 85,215 coronavirus cases.

However, India’s fatality rate still remains significantly better than China’s at 3.2 per cent compared to 5.5 per cent. More than 27,000 people have recovered in India, according to the Union Health Ministry.

Earlier last month, India had also supplied large shipments of hydroxychloroquine to help US fight Covid-19.
Trump had then thanked PM Modi for his ‘strong leadership in helping not just India, but humanity’ in the fight against the new coronavirus.’ He had further thanked India ‘and the Indian people for the decision on HCQ,’ adding that it ‘will not be forgotten.’

The total number of coronavirus cases globally have crossed 4.5 million, including over 3 lakh deaths. US has recorded the most number of deaths at 86,744, followed by UK (34,078) and Italy (31,610).
