Use of nuclear power will depend on circumstances: Rajnath

Jaisalmer, Aug 16 (GCCurrentAffairs) Amidst the ongoing war of words between India and Pakistan, post abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday said the use of nuclear power would depend on the circumstances in the future.

Participating in the fifth International Army Scout Masters Competition in this princely estate of Rajasthan, Mr

Singh mentioned that New Delhi, however, is committed to the doctrine of ‘No First Use’.

The Union Minister also paid tributes to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, on his first death anniversary, at Pokhran.

In a series of tweets, the Defence Minister said, ‘Pokhran is the area which witnessed Atal Ji’s firm resolve to make India a nuclear power and yet remain firmly committed to the doctrine of ‘No First Use’. India has strictly adhered to this doctrine. What happens in future depends on the circumstances.

‘Visited Pokhran today and paid homage to the former Prime Minister of India and one of the stalwarts of Independent India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji on his first death anniversary,’ he added.

His comments drew significance, since both India and Pakistan possess nuclear power and many a times, hints of possible nuclear war have been dropped from Pakistan’s side.

‘India attaining the status of a responsible nuclear nation became a matter of national pride for every citizen of this country. The nation will remain indebted to the greatness of Atal Ji,’ Mr Singh said.

The Indian Army team won the competition, beating seven foreign teams. Uzbekistan took the second spot, while Russia and China came third and fourth, respectively.

India, for the first time, hosted and participated in this event.
